Sheltered beaches in Lanzarote: comparing the bays

Flamingo, Dorada, Papagayo and El Jablillo: candidates to assess against wind direction and the day's swell.

Flamingo, Dorada, Papagayo and El Jablillo: candidates to assess against wind direction and the day's swell.

Playa Blanca: compare Flamingo and Dorada

If you are in the south, start by comparing Flamingo and Dorada during your intended visit. Nearby bays do not necessarily share the same gusts or waves. Coastline shape helps build a shortlist, but revise your choice if the wind direction changes.

Papagayo and El Jablillo: consider the journey too

Papagayo is in the south and El Jablillo in Costa Teguise. Before travelling for shelter, compare your arrival time with the gust forecast. A brief improvement may disappear while you travel. Check access and facilities, especially if you plan to stay for several hours.

Why Famara is not an automatic fallback

Famara's ocean exposure differs from the smaller bays. Falling wind alone does not make it suitable for swimming: swell may keep arriving in light air. For surfing, use the sporting assessment and consider period, direction, tide and ability as well as wave height.
